Thomas Dolby was a one-hit wonder here in the States, but what a hit it was. "She Blinded Me With Science" was a leftfield hit, almost a novelty song, it's popularity bolstered in large part by a fun and funny video that stood out in the golden age of MTV. Would the song have been a hit without MTV?
This, of course, is not that hit, although "Airwaves" was released as a single, it never caught the imagination of the masses, and never got much traction on the charts. Which is a shame, because I believe it's a beautiful song with a lovely, sad melody.
Thomas Dolby was/is an interesting and innovative artist who deserved more success than he garnered in America. As great a song as "She Blinded Me With Science" is, it's perhaps only the third or fourth best song on a really good album.
