Something 4 The Weekend # 148

I did the math. I crunched the numbers. I analyzed the playlists, and my conclusion is this - "The Whole Point Of No Return" was the most played song in my life, 2009 edition.
I believe this is because I have been working (again) on a screenplay called True Tales Of Warlord Todd, and this Style Council song gets used in a scene in which the camera moves through the crowded hallway of a high school circa 1985, in slow motion, showing the different cliques and classes of teenaged life - jocks, nerds, cheerleaders, heshers, freaks, speaks, Thurstons - which illustrates a more modern American interpretation of the old British classicism Paul Weller is singing about here.
Blather...
For the record, the second most played song in my life this past year was "The Blood" by The Cure...
Another song for another scene...

Bear In Heaven: Beast Rest Forth Mouth: "Lovesick Teenagers" [mp3]

It's been twenty-plus years since I was a teenager, so it's difficult for me to remember what it was like to be in love at that age, or if I was actually "in love" at all.

I can say that I dated the same girl, Pamela, for almost all four years of high school, and if we were actually in love, it was the kind of love full of jealousy, petty bickering about stupid shit, and tons of sloppy, super-hot sex.

Her and I were both essentially drunken whores, and all those jealousies that we both had were pointless and groundless, because I was never unfaithful to her, and as far as I know, she was never unfaithful to me. No, we were whores for each other, and it was all equal parts misery and ecstasy.

Is that love? You tell me.

Our good friend, uncle Thurston, channels Bolan with a clear Lucite guitar that shoots sparks from the whammy bar and the nut...

Swaying confidently on red leather platforms and matching ascot while trying to find a rhyme for "monsters"...

Jay-Z: The Black Album: "December 4th" [mp3]

Here's the thing - Jay-Z is a good lyricist, but he's rarely a great lyricist, and he's a good MC, but rarely a great MC, and yet the man is undeniably one of the most towering figures in the history of Hip-Hop, and one worthy of respect and his place near the very top of the pantheon. I think it comes down to his swagger, his confidence, which is such an essential part of any performer, especially in Hip-Hop. Jay-Z gets over because he knows exactly who he is, as a man and as a Rap persona. That's a rare gift, and Shawn Carter carries it exceedingly well.

Today is Jay-Z's 40th birthday. Happy birthday, Hova!
