Things I Liked Last Week 062710

01: JAWS FFFUUUU: I was never a big fan of the FFFUUUU internet meme that began, as these things usually do, over at 4Chan. It's not the meme itself that I don't like, but rather its execution by most internet morans. But I do like this particular piece, which captures the essence of FFFUUUU so succintly, so brilliantly...Yeah, yeah, this is probably old and you've probably seen it already, but...

02: This Perpetual Teen strip I did a while ago wherein Rageman auditions for vocalist (naturally) of Kieth's band, Peppermint Dildo. And then Jack Cactus makes the scene. Dinger Jockey! Classic.

03: This Week's Obligatory Cat and/or Squirrel Picture: Nuff said? Ayup.

04: Gus Van Sant: Gerry [2002]: I watched Gus Van Sant's Death Trilogy completely out of order. Gerry was the first made, so naturally I watched it last. I'm not sure if it matters what order in which Van Sant's three films should be watched, as they're all different kinds of the same thing, death. Elephant concerns murder. Last Days is about suicide. Gerry explores what I'm calling "organic death" - literally a body's organs shutting down (nevermind the ending, because Gerry was dead long before he died). I suppose you could call it a "natural death" because nature is the cause of death in this film. My point is, there may be a million ways to die, but I'm of the belief that these three kinds (organic, murder, suicide) are the only three, into which those million ways can be categorized. If I believed in God, I suppose his hand would be the fourth, and Van Sant would have to make one of those four-part trilogies.

Like the other two death films, Gerry tells it's story mostly through visuals, and here there are long stretches of relative silence, the sounds of the desert, with short bursts of dialogue between the two Gerrys (Matt Damon and Casey Affleck), who get seriously lost while hiking in the desert. But mostly this film is about the beauty and grandeur of nature, and the scenes here are awash in pastel skies stretched over a rugged and jagged terrain, equal parts adventure and danger. As the film progresses, the situation becomes much more serious for the two Gerrys, much more bleak, and here, in the third day of their undoing, the last reel, we see them slowly and painfully shuffling across white salt flats like they might be walking on the moon, or maybe heaven. Despite the pace of the film, I found myself riveted. Like Elephant and Last Days (and life itself) we know the inevitable end of Gerry, and that pulled me along quite effectively. Van Sant once again handles the subject of death with a sort of grace and an even hand, without really passing judgement on characters in any of these films. Death happens. And once again, his secret weapon in Gerry is certainly cinematographer Harris Savides, who's shots linger and shimmer like dreams. I like.

05: Bill Griffith: Zippy: "Four Frame Game" [2000]: Comic stripping and death come together, and Mr. Toad explains the meaning of bowling. If I haven't mentioned this before, Zippy is my favorite comic strip of all time. Hmm...One of these days, maybe I should rank 'em...

06: Kingsford Charcoal Fascination: I've been seeing this commercial around the television lately. That song is Rob Crow's (Pinback) interpretation of "(Keep Feeling) Fascination" by The Human League. At first I wasn't sure how I felt about this, but then I figured "fuck it" - I thought the '80's were a great decade, "Fascination" included.

Typical Sideways Maneuver

It's nearing 4am, and the bottle of Cockspur rum is slowly draining towards a noble death...I'm stumbling around YouTube and wondering if bassist Tessa Pollitt or any of The Slits are actually "chicks" by my silly and arbitrary definition...

Kissing Sideways Maneuver's Families

Silversun Pickups' bassist and singer Nikki Monninger is the reason for ranking 29 chicks on bass in the previous post (the band was on Letterman the other night). She's definitely the best part of a good (but not yet game-changing) band, she's quite lovely, seems to be kinda tall, she does The Pogo, and in this video she is wearing the exact same style of shoes that are sitting by my front door right now - Chocolate Low-Top Chuck Taylors...I do not have a Video Wizard t-shirt, however...Or red short-shorts.

"Smitten" is a good word...

My Theory Is That Vincent Is God

Last year, Evangeline Lilly held down the #2 spot on my 2008 Laminated List...

Well, it's getting to be that time of year, babycakes...Can she hold tight to #2? Will she even make the list? Stay tuned...

BTW - I didn't do the photoshopping on this pic, but I don't remember where I found it on the web, either...

Sideways *cough* Maneuver

This is a Luden's Cough Drop commercial featuring a song called "The Big Squeeze" by Frank Zappa. Zappa was actually hired to do the music for this commercial. Wunnerful, wunnerful...

A Nintendo commercial filmed in Hong Kong...The music sounds like Pizzicato 5, but I suppose it could be just about anybody...And the end of the mersh is just the slightest bit silly/stupid, and possibly creepy...

Tape Jazz Massacre Introduced Me To My Mind

Ornette Yukahiro, one half of venerated Samplecore practitioners, Tape Jazz Massacre, sent me a short, mostly incoherent, email last night, which included the attached jpg for what I presume is the cover art for an upcoming TJM CD likely entitled Massacre Of Tape, or maybe just Of Tape...Like I said, Ornette's email was a mess, though he did mention some "new hoot pop coming soon", so I'm confident that was the gist of the message - new Tape Jazz shit coming soon, and it's certainly been awhile, hasn't it?

So, anyways, here's the original Black Sabbath cover, just for comparison's sake...

Ahh, The Dutch...

There's really nothing that can be said about this Dutch television commercial except that I once dated a Dutch woman (hey, this is Wisconsin, and we're swimmin' in Dutch women), and well, um...Yeah, I dated a Dutch woman...

If yr at work, I recommend turning up the volume on yr PC as loud as it will go, and then dance around yr office/cubicle with yr junk hanging out...It'll be yr own 30 second sexy dance party, and then you'll get to go on unemployment for awhile...

Tape Jazz Massacre

Whatthahahahahell?

Why not do a bit more cross-promotion?

Straight from the top rung of Thee ButterScotch Threshold ladder, howzabout a link or more to TAPE JAZZ MASSACRE, the dynamic duo of sampling sonics, 100% (or close enough for Jazz) copyright infringed audio...Ornette Yukahiro does most of the musical slicing and dicing, while Big Jimmmmi Cakefingers has the painstaking task of cutting up the spoken word stuff into fork-friendly chunks of chocolately-smooth concrete...

I think the guys reached their peak with Cookin' With Tape Jazz Massacre (shit, apostrophes make for bad links), on which Ornette sampled alot of Jazz...more Jazz than he ever had sampled before, and Big Jimmmmi served heapin' plates of word salad cut liberally from cooking shows and whatnot...

Of course, more than one person I know prefers 2003's Electro:Quote, another concept album, this one dedicated to television and politics...

The boys have been laying low the past year...After 2005's Antique Technique, which re-imagines The Saint, an old radio show starring Vincent Price, as The Aint...But I have it on good authority that before the end of 2007 we might be witness to a brand new TJM longplayer...Rumor has it the album is called Bakin' With Tape Jazz Massacre (no link available at this time) , and yeah, it's a sequel of sorts to Cookin'...

And finally, I have to mention The Special Jellies...The Special Jellies are/were a project/object/band I did with Ornette back in the winter of 2001/2002 while Big Jimmmmi was ice-fishing on Big Cedar Lake...Essentially, I sang the lyrics of some favorite songs from the 1980's, while Ornette provided random sampled accompaniment NOT confined to that decade...It's part-karaoke, part-mashup, I guess, and my singing is half-honorable, half-horrible...
So, there ya go...some links to assorted pages in the TJM section of Thee BST...Feel free to listen to any number of mp3's from all their releases...Six in total at the moment, seven if you include the unreleased Shit You Don't Hear At Parties compilation, and eight if you include Absolut Massacre, which is Tape Jazz Massacre's complete output from 1996-2006, and unfortunately only available to friends and journalists...I've got TWO copies, babycakes!

Let's Go To The Mall!

Back in 1987, I was in a band called Mumniti. We were five entirely pretentious art punks who were mad at the world, and more specifically, the recording industry, because there we were, a middling band on the Milwaukee scene, watching acts like Richard Marx, Wang Chung, and The Jets on MTV and sitting near the top of the Billboard charts.

Oh, we were smart enough to realize our Art Punk pretensions would never make us rich or famous, but I think we were too young and naive to understand exactly how Pop Culture behaves and exists.

Anyways, I remember one night, after a typical band practice, we sat around Biff's living room with our girlfriends and a couple other hangers on, and we took turns talking to teenybopper strangers on the Tiffany Hotline, a 1-900 chatline brought to synergistic life through the wonder that was Tiffany, heir to Debbie Gibson's teen pop throne. Tiffany, who's ascent to that throne went through any and every mall in America.

So, here we are.

I watched the CBS sitcom, How I Met Your Mother, tonight, and the big payoff of the episode was this video, which shows one of the characters in her teenage years, when she was a Canadian pop princess who rose to semi-fame via a mall tour of her own.

I laughed a little, and I cried a little. I laughed because America really loved its denim back in the late '80's, and I cried because Mumniti was a great fucking band, and I miss those guys.

Of Montreal Steakhouses

Of Montreal is a cool psych pop band outta Athens, GA (home of REM from the previous post), who have licensed one of their songs, "Wraith Pinned To The Mist" for an Outback Steakhouse television commercial. The first time I saw/heard this commercial, I nearly plotzed my Sansabelts..."Is this Of Montreal I'm hearing?" I asked myself.

"Yes, yes it is." I replied.

I'm always tempted to cry "SELLOUT!" when I encounter such things, but hey - I'd rather have Kevin Barnes and his band make some money off this than having "I Feel Good" by James Brown licensed for the 3 millionth time.

That's beside the point, though...According to Barnes himself, it was impossible to say no when he was approached about the project, and I can appreciate that...It's a wonderful life when a band like Of Montreal plays to images of meats and sauces.

Yo! Where My WASPs at?

It's funny cuz it's true - Hip Hop has finally been 100% co-opted by white America, but that's okay, cuz these people are Puffy's friends and neighbors, and Puffy is the coolest, blackest man alive.

BTW: In case you can't pick up on it, this video is major domo promo shtuff for Seagram's. It's probably viral, so please use accordingly.
